How do I know if I’m the boho, classic, or preppy girl!?

In regards to fashion, I get a lot of questions about how to create a unique but trendy, personal style. My answer depends on how much time you have to listen! So here is the answer for those who have more then a minute to chat: It doesn’t happen over night and it takes time. We ALL have those “fashion regrets” as I call them. (What on earth was I doing thinking a mini skirt and UGGs were cool, in the middle of winter nonetheless!?) You have to mess up in order to succeed. Some risks you take will pay off, and some won’t. You just have to be willing to try. How do you know if you are the classic girl? You have to try the “Classic girl” pieces and see if it feels like you! People always the ask, “Well how do I know if that’s right?” Honestly? It’s all a feeling (and I’m not just saying that because I’m a Psych major). You’ll know how comfortable you may, or may not be as you are trying out new looks. That is just the price of the game. The most important tip I have to offer about creating your own style is (drum roll please…) to pay attention to the style of clothing you gravitate towards, and pay attention to those pieces you see that girl on the street wearing that you can’t help but gawk over. That will give you somewhat of a guideline as far as what direction to head towards. People watching can be more then just analyzing your neighbor. I can’t even count how many times I’ve seen someone on the street that has inspired my outfit for the next day. The part where it becomes personal is how you change your inspiration to fit you! For example, I like long flowy tops, and big loose cardigans. Like I’ve said before, I can’t stay away from leggings either (PS the way I figure that out is by trying as many different style of clothes that I can get my hands on). That most likely puts me in the boho category. So then, when I’m looking to update my wardrobe and do a little shopping, I tend to hit all the boho themed stores. I don’t take an outfit idea straight from a mannequin. I take my favorite piece from the mannequin, and add it to another piece that I love from a completely different store. That way I can show my point of view from my outfit. I still feel trendy and current, but I mixed it up and made it my own. The picture below is the result!

personal style

You and I could go shopping together and pick two totally different favorite pieces from the same mannequin, and come up with completely different outfits, but both be in the boho category. There you have it, trendy and unique all in the same package! Now go do some people watching, and start creating your personal style!

So the new school year is here…..

One of my favorite times of year is the first day of school. Crazy, right? Well let me explain: I love the feeling of beginnings. Think of how much magic and possibility is held in one little word. Begin. The greatest stories throughout time, all have a beginning. There is nothing to lose, and nothing to gain, life just is. I am one of those people who like things to be perfect. All the time. One life lesson that I am constantly trying to drill into my skull is that perfection will not, and can not be found in this lifetime. Beginnings for a perfectionist like me, bring a sense of peace. There is no room to mess up, there is no room for excuses, and there is no past to follow you. There is something so thrilling about getting a fresh start, and getting lost in the wonderment of what if? Recently, I’ve decided to act on the wonderment instead of just….wonder. Life is what you make it, and the story can only end as good as it begins. Make the beginning of this one the best beginning you have ever had. You are in control of your own story, no one else. Try something new, make a new friend, do something completely out of your comfort zone, and let life begin!  One of my favorite quotes states, “Trust the magic of beginnings.” So my friend, at the beginning of this new school year, just trust the magic. You never know what might happen!

The plan to be free part 2

It was determined that the soon to be King and Queen would spend time apart, to clear their heads, and refrain what was rightfully theirs. All of the sudden, once there was no one telling her what to feel any more, the Princess remembered what it was like to feel for herself. And her heart was broken, shattered into pieces. She finally knew. Suddenly overcome by confusion and sadness, her weeps turned into sobs. Unlike the prince, the princess was all to familiar with dark and confusing feelings like these. Long ago, before the prince had ever arrived, she swore on her grave she would never let herself feel that way again. Now here she was years later, facing those feelings she worked so hard to destroy. The one who claimed to love her the most was the cause of the emotional quake. So what was she to do? Forgive and say it’s ok, I understand? Or run away and stick to the promise on her grave? The prince was aware of the feelings and thoughts of his soon to be Queen, and he didn’t know what to say. He didn’t know how to help, because those dark and dreary feelings followed him like a shadow and that was all he had to bring. He promised he would dismiss them. That they would be gone and never to return, but that was a lie. The princess had learned long ago to never make a promise about those dark feelings to another, because they don’t belong to anyone but to the one who is feeling them. No one can save you from them, no one can change them, no one destroy them but you. And the prince couldn’t, he wouldn’t, because he made the decision to change for another. Not for himself. So he lied. He lied to keep his princess. He kept the lie going as long as he could, until he couldn’t breathe. While gazing into the starlit night sky, he wished on a star that the Princess wouldn’t leave. That she would understand why he did, what he did. He hoped she would forgive him, and that happily ever after would be their’s.

The thing about life, is that it has a tricky way of sneaking up on you. What once seemed right, can all the sudden seemed wrong. The princess discovered his lie, before the prince confessed. Whether she will admit it or not, there is speculation that she knew what she had to do. She just didn’t want to believe it was true. If she stayed with the prince she would break her promise to herself. More importantly if she stayed, the prince wouldn’t have a chance at living. There was a life lesson that the Prince did not quite understand, and ultimately that is why the princess left. The Prince did not know how to live his life for himself. He could live it for the his mother, the Queen. His father, the King. Or his love, the princess. He loved them each very much, but he didn’t love himself. The most important one of all. He was so consumed in every other person in his world, and what he couldn’t control, that he forgot what he could control. And before he realized it, he lost control of that too.

The princess couldn’t take it anymore. She refused to watch the one she loved destroy himself, and refuse to be helped. One night after everyone in her palace fell asleep. She made a plan. She titled it,”The plan to be free.” It wasn’t just a plan for her sake, but for his too. The next day at tea, she left her castle grounds, and made the hardest most courageous decision she could. She wrote the prince a letter. This is what she said:

“My dear Prince. I love you. Because I love you I must leave. Not to cause you harm, but to save you from it. You deserve to live life for you. Not for me, not for the Queen. But for you. I have watched you cry silent tears of confusion, and loneliness for too long now.  You must decide when they stop. I can’t do it for you. The longer I stay, the longer you wait. Because now you feel safe. You feel like you can stop. You stopped trying long ago. Life is not about stopping. Life is about beginning. I seem to be the one stopping you. And you are the only one who can begin.

You have told me my favorite lies. You have been my favorite lie. You must love yourself, before you can love me, or anyone else for that matter. One day there will be a princess in a different land, who will see you struggles, and shortcomings. But by then they will be mountains that have been overcome, and stories of victory. Not stories of defeat. How I wish I was the one to hear them, but being the one to begin them must do.”

While she ran deep into the forrest to begin her journey, tears streamed her face. She wished and hoped the ending would be different. But she knew this is what must be done. As she walked the flower lined path towards the forrest, she wondered what the prince was thinking. Did he understand? Did he care? Was he relieved? Was he afraid? Did he love her enough to come find her in the deep and dark forrest? Or was he really that scared of his dreadful shadow? She walked, and she walked….and the prince never came. She walked and she walked and she realized all at once. That now she was free. No longer trapped by someone else’s pain. No longer mistaken, for trying to heal hurt that wasn’t hers. She was free. She could breathe. She was sad, and confused. Life wasn’t the way she had planned. But life was her adventure. She did not need to be affected by someone else’s mistakes. She had thought for so long that she knew what she wanted. But the prince had taught her that life is unafraid to shower you with twists and turns that seem unimaginable. The part that she was learning on her own was that, some bring joy and some bring sadness. But that is just life. And you can choose how to handle it. The prince chose to let the sadness consume him, drown him almost. With the expectation for the princess to be the full time lifeguard. But the  princess couldn’t do that. She barely did it for herself. So she chose to handle life with adventure. With happiness, and a smile in her eye. To seek out the good, and not let the bad cling too tightly.

Where is the prince now? No one really knows. The hope is that he was brave enough to let himself begin, and learn what it means to love yourself, so that you can properly love another. As for the Princess… She begin her journey to happiness once again.  She began a new life for herself. Unexpected completely, and not what she had hoped for, but one where her feelings could be hers. It was one where she could breathe, no longer pulled into the deep waves of sorrow. She was now pulled into the waves of hope, and dreams. Where she had always wanted to be. She thought about the prince from time to time. But then she remembered the lies. Her favorite lies, in fact, and they gave her the strength to swim deeper into the sea of dreams.

The plan to be free part 1

A friend recently said to me, “It’s your story to tell when and how you choose.” Those words of wisdom inspired this post…

Once upon a time in a far away land, there was a beautiful princess that hoped to one day find her prince. She searched and she searched, and one day he came. He said and did all of the right things. Until one day he didn’t. But the princess was so happy to have finally found a prince, that she choose not to notice. It came time for the prince and princess to merge their two kingdoms. To make one they would call their own. In each respective kingdom, the prince and princess played a vital part. As they began to form a kingdom to call their own their respective kingdom’s begin to tear. The King and Queen of the Princess began to observe stress and anger coming from their princess. They wondered where it was coming from, the duties of being a princess? Was the responsibility to much handle? They began to alter the duties of their princesses’s title, in order to accommodate, what seemed to be, the needs of their princess. Expecting a happy result to come, her royal parents were perplexed to discover their princesses’s condition worsening.

Meanwhile the Prince was happy. Life was beginning to turn out the way he had always wanted. So he gave up. He decided it was time to stop trying, because everything he had ever wanted was about to be his.  In the Prince’s kingdom, the royal court decreed they were prepared and ready for such a joyous occasion. When the palace doors closed each night, negative feelings would cling to the air like a skunk’s smell. Tension begin to rise, false accusations began, and what was once seemingly uncomplicated became convoluted. There was no said reason as to why the tension erupted, still to this day there is no explanation for the disruption in the Prince’s kingdom, but everyone in each respective kingdom had their theories and ideas. Each idea and theory was blown out of proportion. Words were twisted and negative feelings begin to arise among the kingdoms. The Prince began to feel anxious, and wasn’t familiar with how to handle the stress his life began to bring. He began to tell the Princess how to feel, because he lost control of his.

The princess attempted to make her prince happy. Her only concern was his feelings. When he wasn’t happy, she altered anything and everything to help him. She gave up her life, and the things, and people she loved so he would understand he wasn’t alone. But he didn’t. He became more anxious, and demanded, and expected control. The Princess wondered why. She questioned if she could run a kingdom with this prince. She wondered why he wouldn’t give her what she needed. She had asked, sometimes she felt like she begged. But he didn’t listen. She was tired of being the one to give what was needed, and not receive what was needed. The prince didn’t care, but that’s not what the princess saw. She saw her kingdom being destructed. The one dream that had seemed unattainable for so long, slowly losing hope. She wondered if her sacrifices would ever end, because she didn’t have much left to give.

be YOU

My blog marks the beginning of a new chapter in my life. It’s time for a fresh start and a promise not to dwell in the past. I believe trials only make us stronger, and are placed in our path for a wiser purpose then we initially understand. I believe agency holds more power then we realize, and we literally can choose every thought, feeling, emotion, and action. With that said, I don’t always choose happiness. I don’t always choose to be kind. I don’t always choose to think smart. But every time I choose. In my life I’ve noticed a theme, I always choose to let others control my happiness. I let others decide how I feel about something, and sometimes I give other too much control over my actions. I literally am handing people my agency. It isn’t helping anyone, especially me. This has happened time and time again in my life and it’s time for it to stop. The more I think about it, the more I realize it’s all about confidence. (It seems like that’s the answer to more life questions then I sometimes realize) With confidence comes peace in who you are, actions, thought, feelings, emotions included. Knowing that YOU are enough can disintegrate the need to place your agency on someone’s else shoulders.

I believe Confidence comes from the inside. And most definitely by not letting others control who you are or who you can become. There is no need to receive validation from others who even have a slight desire to try and take your ability to choose. Your sparkle is what makes you special. So don’t let someone twist it. It’s yours, not theirs. They have their own. Everyone has their own beauty, their own sparkle, their own story to tell. Own your story, own your beauty. Because this world is running out of originality, and it needs you.

The perfect summer time soirée

After years of hunting for the perfect spontaneous adventures with these two (and the little tag along 🙂 ), we’ve learned a thing a two about the how to nail a perfect summer time party. The goal is for it to be as inexpensive as possible, and a ton of fun. After a day full of school, work and adult like duties, we wanted a break from life! Contrary to popular belief, not everyone in California has a pool…so we had to get creative and fast! For our little pool party inspired soirée, we ran to Target and decided to grab the closest thing we could find to a pool: A slip-n-slide! It was quite a blast from the past, and super fun. The Target close to home has a slurpee machine on hand, and luckily we had an iphone to blast our spotify playlists from. Once we plugged the hose in, the fun began! My personal opinion is that spontaneous parties, are the best. But I am a notorious planner, and do love putting together a party for those I love. So for my fellow planners here is the master list for your summer pool inspired party!

1. Your guest list. Small or large you decide! Just make sure there is enough of whatever activity you choose to keep everyone entertained.

2. You water inspired activity~ The center piece of your party! Some ideas to get your brainstorming rolling: slip-n-slide, water ballon toss, water gun fight, water tag, water ballon volleyball…the ideas are endless!

3. Everyone loves a feast, and while a a summer soriee may not call for a feast, it’s important to keep your guest hydrated! Flavored water, sports drinks, or slurpees are some summer inspired drinks. Since everyone will be wet I think it’s best to keep individually wrapped snacks on hand. Small fruit cups, pre-made or homemade are one of my favorites! A fire pit with some smores are always a summer hit if your pool inspired event is in the evening.

4. Music. Something about throwing on your favorite song in the background, makes moments like these all the more sweet. So make sure your current favorites are downloaded and ready!

5.Have fun, and overload your instagram!

A dash of personality

Ever since starting my blog I’ve been reading TONS of other blogs similar to mine. I love seeing other people’s stories, and reading about their triumphs. The common thread among all the blogs I’ve enjoyed has been how personal each one is. I thought that I had a done a good job making my blog as personal as I could, but then I realized there is always a way to make something better, dig a little deeper, and try a little harder. So I came up with a few random ramblings to add a dash of personality to my blog, so you don’t keep reading random fashion tips and thoughts about life from a stranger 🙂

  • I am a list maker through and through (hence turning this “about me” into a list). One of my favorite feelings is crossing something off my to-do list. I love how accomplished I feel, and like there is some tiny slice of the world i’ve conquered.
  • French fries are my true love. A coke and medium fry, from good old Mickey d’s, is the way to my heart.
  • I still tear up at the end of the notebook, even though I know exactly how it’s gonna end. I’ve watched that movie a thousand times!!
  • I started this blog as a way to express what I felt like I had trouble saying out loud.
  • Writing is one of my passions, along with nailing my lip syncing techniques to Katy Perry’s “California Girls”.
  • Disneyland is my happy place. SO many childhood memories there. My mom was a secret shopper for disney while I was a kid, so “take your kid to work day” was a weekly thing. Can you say luckiest kid ever?
  • I am a complete control freak when it comes to cleaning and organizing. I like things perfectly spotless and labeled. I know, I know good luck when it comes time for mommyhood.
  • My siblings are EXTREMELY important to me. Like my ride or die peeps. I am not very good at defending myself sometimes, but when you mess with one of them the dragon lady inside of me is released.
  • Christmas lights make me happy.
  • “White Christmas” is one of my favorite holiday movies.
  • One day, when the time is right, I’ll write more about this: In 6th grade I was diagnosed with a generalized anxiety disorder. (That time came…click on the link to read more.)
  • I first fell in love with fashion around 5 years old. That story is to come too.
  • I may love disneyland, but I am TERRIFIED of Mickey Mouse. Like he comes near, and I run and scream. Don’t know why, it’s just the way it’s always been.
  • Reality TV is my weakness. Bring on the Housewives, and yes of course I keep up with the Ks! (My mom is going to be completely embarrassed that I just admit to watching that.)
  • I can sing every word to every “High school Musical” song…from all 3 movies. (And if my Mom wasn’t embarrassed before she definitely is now…)
  • I have absolutely fallen in love with blogging, and never expected it to turn into what it is beginning to.
  • One of my biggest lifelong dreams has been/ is to travel to Europe and see the Eiffel tower in person.
  • I have skydived.
  • I have also bungee jumped.
  • Even though I am scared of heights.
  • But I am like one of those “over come your fears and don’t let them hold you back because life sucks when you do” people. Hence the skydiving…and bungee jumping.

My goal with this post is not only to be more open and honest with you, my sweet reader, but to make it clear that life isn’t always what it seems. Even the people that seem like they have it all together, and for the record I am not claiming to be, don’t. They have their silly quirks and ticks, just like you. We are human after all, and humans don’t come with a manual for how to solve the imperfections. The quirks and ticks are what make each of us special, just like our Mommies told us 🙂

Current obsessions

There are some summer trends I’ve been eyeing for a while that I thought I’d share! This post may seem a bit scattered, but the style tips and fashion observations have sort of just been swirling around in my head, so here it is. The pictures were all taken at a local lake with the ever faithful Josh!

To add on to the latest makeover Monday post, staple accessories can also help achieve a balanced wardrobe. The staple accessories are simple and basic. Versatility is the key to staples. They should be the pieces that don’t require much thought, and you can grab on the go. I have my gold staples, and silver staples. According to what outfit I am wearing, I can switch between the silver and gold.

My gold staples right now and featured in the photo below are: a single gold bangle, pearl earring, a gold and pearl necklace, and a simple gold statement ring.

Another trend I am beginning to fall in love with is tunics! I am OBSESSED with this tunic I recently snagged from free people. It is beyond comfy, and I am wondering why I haven’t jumped on this trend sooner!

What are some trends you have been eyeing this summer? I have also noticed big black tote bags in every store, and on every girl’s arm! Any others??

Makeover Monday: The staples

As promised here is the next piece of makeover Monday! The last makeover Monday post was all about organizing and updating your closet. The “Staple” pieces in each closet are the pieces the rest of your wardrobe revolves around. The staples are your investment pieces. Don’t be afraid to spend a little extra on these pieces, they are what your whole wardrobe is about! Since starting makeover Monday I’ve noticed I like explaining the steps to a perfect look, with an equation. So here is the staple equation: There are two categories to the staple pieces. The basics (the pieces that keep a wardrobe going) and the personal basics (the pieces that make your wardrobe YOURS!). The basics are the versatile pieces that can work with anything. They are your back ups, and the pieces that don’t require much thought. They just go with the flow! The personal basics are where you get to show the world who you are. Fashion is an expression of who you are, so let the world know how fabulous you are!  Here are my staples, let me know what you think! What would add? Take away? Comment below!

The basics:

Plain White button down. Matches with everything and anything. Perfect for business, casual, day at the beach. You name it, it’ll work!

A basic black pencil skirt is a perfect canvas for your own personal touches!

The perfect pair of skinny jeans (or straight legged jeans, if skinnies aren’t your thing!) are a must to everyone’s wardrobes! The most basic, of basics. Jeans go with it all. Any season, any day any time! I think a darker wash compliments most patterns and colors. (Maybe not this dark…but this was the only picture I could find that had the cut of jeans I was going for!)

A black blazer goes casual, business, dinner out, a day out. It’s incredibly versatile. Also, a side note: There are washer approved blazers, not all of them have to be dry cleaned!

Comfy Solid colored t-shirts are a MUST. On most days I rock one of these, and then when it’s time to dress it up, I’ll add one of my personal staples. I like v-necks that are knit. I love layering them with tons of accessories too. My favorite places to get some are Nordstrom, and Urban Outfitters. For a cheaper selection, Forever 21 usually has them in stock in TONS of colors. My collection is growing and I’m way too embarrassed to tell you how many colors I have! But they are comfy…and go with like everything…

My Personal basics:

This is where it gets fun! My #1 personal staple (that has been since I was a kid) is a jean jacket! I love them. I think they are so comfy. Denim matches with everything, so why not wear it on top too? My collection is in a couple of different shade so of denim. There is this little store called Kaitlyn, that’s where I find my favorite denim jackets!

Cheetah print vans. I have no real explanation. Except that I am obsessed with cheetah print. And these shoes.

Patterned leggings. The comfiest, easiest ensembles come together with these. My favorite are my rose printed ones. But my collection for these is growing quickly too…

(I got these at target!)

What are you staple pieces? Do you agree with the must haves? What are your personal ones? Comment below!
